液体金属といえば映画ターミネーター2で登場する敵役、T-1000を差し置いて説明することはあまりにも無礼だ。ターミネーター2のアレ、といえばだいたいは通じるだろう。
公開は1991年でCGやVFXの素晴らしさを知らしめることにもなった説明不要の名作。現代でも3DCGの発展や演出上の都合、危険性やコストのために液体金属を要するシーンを実写で撮ることはまずありえない。今や現実に限りなく近い、意のままの仮想現実の方が創作にもビジネスにも都合がいい。そうなると実写の価値とは何だろうか？
予定を通り越して予想もしなかったいい結果を得ることが実写の意義の一つだ。知性や想像力、美意識を超えた圧倒的なリアリティ。イマジネーションだけではおこりえない予測不能な具体性。考えをこねくり回すよりは、現実でジタバタした方がシンプルということもある。通常ならネガティヴな要素がプラスに働くことも多い。
つまりはそこに自由があるのだ。撮ってみるまで結果がわからないなら、何をやってもいい。この自由さが損なわれない限り実写の可能性は無限であり続けるはずだ。

Terminator2:Judgment Day
It would be so rude not to mention T-1000, an adversary in the movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day when talking about liquid metal. Yes, that thing in Terminator 2. That one.
Released in 1991, the movie showed the world the power of CG and VFX, and it is a masterpiece that needs no further explanation. Even in recent years, a scene that requires a use of liquid metal is never shot live because of the advancement of 3DCG, practicality of direction, potential danger and cost. Virtual reality was never closer to reality than it is now, and it can be manipulated as one wishes, so it’s naturally a good tool for both business and creation. What then is the value of live-action filming?
One of the values is that live-action filming can generate a good result far beyond one’s plans or expectations. The sense of reality exceeds intelligence, imagination and aesthetics. It brings about unpredictable details in the way imagination cannot. Sometimes it’s simpler to just run with it and shoot it live than to try to come up with some ideas. Things that are normally disadvantageous often work to one’s advantage too.
In other words, there is freedom. Since you don’t know how it turns out until you complete filming, you can do anything. The possibility of live-action filming is infinite as long as that freedom is not lost.
